Typed manuscript in soft green card wrappers bound with ties, hand written title to the cover, the first page inscribed to the lower edge No of words 82,000 and Janet Frame c/o Bank of N.S.W. Berkeley Sq London W.1. dedication reads To R.H.C. There is also a letter from Carl D Brandt of Brandt & Brandt, 101 Park Avenue New York to Albion Wright of the Pegasus Press in Christchurch which reads ‘Dear Mr Wright, I am sending you herewith Janet Frame’s novel THE EDGE OF THE ALPHABET, which was sent to us from the Heath office by mistake, dated January 2, 1962’, also a critics note on the book.
Janet Frame gave two original manuscripts to Albion Wright of The Pegasus Press, one is now in Otago University collection. This & the other manuscript were passed down through Albions family, laterally in the possession of Mr Trevor Swainson.
An exceptionally rare and unique piece of New Zealand literary history.
