Exceptional NZ & International Fine Art Results Achieved

Our August NZ & International Fine Art Auction exceeded expectations totalling well over $2 million hammer. The auction room was packed for all three sessions with an additional 400 plus online bidders participating in the sale nationwide. The cover image, the Rita Angus 'Mistresspiece' of Mt Stewart (lot 28) attracted strong bidding both in the room and on the internet, exceeding pre-sale estimate of $180,000 - 280,000, finally realising $325,900. The trend continued with works by female artist's fairing particularly well. Frances Hodgkin's sublime gouache Corfe Castle (lot 30) achieved $169,000 (Est $100,000 - 160,000) & Heather Straka's striking portrait The Gatekeeper (lot 23) achieved a new auction record for the artist selling for $50,600. The previous record for the artist was $32,000 + premium. Our strong run on results continued with The Diplomatist (1918) (lot 26) realising $531,000 & the early 1900 landscape When Evening Shadows Fall (lot 27) achieving $100,000.

 

 

Our Day Sale continued in the same vein with the Estate of Robert Williamson Sam Cairncross collection attracting some highly competitive bidding. The collection grossed over $80,000 far exceeding expections. Particular highlights including the iconic lot 101: Perrett's Corner achieving $5,000 + premium & lot 105: Bather's achieving $6,250 + premium. Impressive prices exceeding estimated ranges were also seen for works by a diverse range of artists including E Mervyn Taylor, A Austen Deans, Tom Esplin, Russell Clark, Bill Hammond, Joanna Braithwaite, Marcus King to name a select few.
