A Fine Early 19th Century Papahou

A fine  early 19th century Papahou, extensively carved to the top and sides with wheku, manaia and marakihau will feature in our upcoming Māori, Oceanic, African, and Asian art auction to be held 7 December

Estimate : $30,000-$40,000 

 

This sale will include a superb offering of Māori artefacts including three important historic mere pounamu, wakahuia and papahou, weapons, hei-tiki and items of adornment and a large collection of toki. Also included will be a large library of tribal art and Māori reference books and a collection of historic Māori photographs.
The African and Asia component of the sale will include the Lim-Strutt collection of African art and Southeast Asia ceramics comprising over 70 pieces. Also featured will be a large collection of Papua New Guinean items from the Sepik River region and a collection of Buddhist sculpture and Chinese and Tibetan art including a superb Ming period temple guardian figure, a large impressive Thangka depicting Buddha Shakyamuni and a rare 18th century Tibetan Kapala.
